News from around the League - 2009/10

15th May

The Annual Presentation Evening was held yesterday with trophies presented to the winners and runners-up of the various tournaments and Leagues. In addition to the memento trophies, gift vouchers were also awarded, courtesy of our sponsors Tony Pryce Sports.

10th May

Peter Fairey and partner Laura Newman proved too strong for everyone in the Divisional Tournament winning the final in 3 sets against Barry Harriss and Fiona Dennis.
The 2nd Division Tournament was one by another Westland pair, Lyndsay Smith and Jane Reddaway who beat Paul Boggust and Angela Head.

24th Apr

Charmouth had an extended club night at Westlands this evening where their 3 teams were competing in the Knock-Out Cup and Plate finals along with Bridport Royals.

In the Cup Final, congratulations to Charmouth 3 who scored just enough points to overcome Charmouth 1, winning by just 27 points, less than 2 points per game.

The Plate Final was even closer with Bridport Royals spoiling the Charmouth party by scoring just 18 points more than Charmouth 2.

Commiserations must go to Budmouth who have led the FourTwo League for most of the season only to be overtaken at the death by a single point by rivals Yeovil Graduates 1.
Having completed all of their matches some weeks ago and despite losing only one match all season, Budmouth’s downfall has been the closeness of their contests, winning only three matches 9-0 compared to the eight 9-0 victories enjoyed by Yeovil Graduates 1.

Wessex Wanderers 1 have now officially been relegated from Division One following defeat against Bridport Royals 1. Bridport must now play in the play-off match against Casterbridge who finished 2nd in Division Two with the winner playing next season in Division One and the loser in Division Two.

7th Apr

Congratulations to Westland who are Division One Champions in the Mixed League following victory over Yeovil Graduates 1 who will finish as runners-up. As in Division Two, the top spot has been claimed with a match left to play and with an un-beaten season in sight.

Runners-up in Division Two will be Casterbridge following their victory over Bridport Royals 2 and they will be hosting the play-off match against either Wessex Wanderers 1 or Bridport Royals 1 according to rule B1(d)(ii).

30th Mar

There was a reduced entry in the Junior Boys Tournament which saw Tom Buck finish in 2nd place behind winner Chris Webb.
The Girls tournament had to be cancelled through lack of entries.

27th Mar

Bridport Royals have lost their un-beaten status in the FourTwo League, losing to leaders Budmouth who can now only be caught by Yeovil Graduates 1. Having completed all of their matches, Budmouth must now sweat it out and wait to see whether they’ve done enough....

18th Mar

Congratulations to Wessex Wanderers 2 who are Division Two Champions in the Mixed League with a game to spare following back-to-back victories over the two Charmouth teams. They cannot now be caught and have one more match to win to complete an un-beaten season.

8th Mar

Congratulations to Paul Boggust and Angela Head (Cerne Abbas) and to Adrian Cocker and Dave Calway (Wessex Wanderers) for winning respectively the Handicap Mixed and Mens Tournaments.

6th Mar

Bridport Royals remain unbeaten in the FourTwo League following victory over 3rd-place Westland. Although only in 4th position they have games in hand over all the teams above them. Budmouth still lead the way as they have done most of the season with Yeovil Graduates 1 in 2nd spot.

The Mixed League sees Yeovil Graduates 1 leading Division One although they suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of 2nd-place Westland who remain unbeaten with games in hand over their rivals.

Wessex Wanderers 2 remain unbeaten at the head of Division Two with Charmouth 1 in second despite a rather disasterous 8-1 defeat at Bishops Caundle.

3rd Feb

In what is the highest scoring match seen so far, Yeovil Graduates 2 amassed a mammoth 505 points against Wessex Wanderers in their FourTwo match tonight. Indeed, the losers total of 465 points is also higher than any other score this season and would have been enough to secure victory in any other match. A long evening with some very close games. Well done to all involved - take a moment to get your breathe back!

24th Jan

The badminton taster event seems to have been successful with a number of people attending. The event was intended to spread the word about the WBDL and encourage new players to join local clubs and perhaps get new clubs to join the League.
A number of men from the Weymouth area attended and also a selection of players from Sherborne, including some from a new club named "Seasons" which is very encouraging. Most attendees seemed to enjoy themselves and stayed for the entire afternoon.
There is certainly a possibility of at least one new team for next season, with both Seasons and Shuttlebusters sounding enthusuastic. Also the players from Weymouth were really enthusiastic about playing badminton competitively and were discussing setting up a new club but may be short of ladies initially.
Thanks to Steve Grier for organising the event and all those who helped on the day.

17th Jan

Congratulations to Babs and Robin Bugden who swept all before them to be victorious in the Partner Swap tournament.

8th Jan

Happy New Year to all.
Sorry about all the snow ... Snowman

A number of matches are being postponed due to unavailability of Westland Sports Hall in Yeovil before Christmas and of course the current bad weather.
The official end of season is April 2nd, but a number of matches have already been scheduled for after that date and there will undoubtedly be others, so don’t worry. Try to get all matches played by the end of April though.

Please remember to inform the Results Secretary of cancellations and also when they have been re-arranged so that the on-line fixture lists can be maintained.

20th Nov

The Divisional Tournaments have had to be postponed due to storm damage at Westland Leisure Complex.
It is hoped to re-schedule the tournament for the end of the season, probably in April or May 2010.

20th Jul

A reminder to all teams that they need to let the Knock-out Tournament Secretary know their intentions regarding the KO Cup for this season. Teams wishing to participate must do so before the end of September.

8th Jul (AGM)

At the AGM a couple of small rule changes were proposed and carried:

  1. The first was simply a clarification that teams play each other twice in a season, once at home and once away (Rule B1(c)).
  2. The second is more important because all clubs must nominate a minimum of 6 players for each team (except the lowest ranked team) before ANY team plays a match (Rule B3(b)). The Results Secretary MUST be notified of the nominated teams before any matches are played by the club. A nomination form is available for this.

Subsequent to the AGM, the empty committee post of Mixed Div 2 rep has been filled.
